The Business of Legalizing Marijuana

Cindy Zheng, a McQuarrie employment and human rights lawyer, was featured in several media interviews last Friday to discuss the implications of the legalization of marijuana for employers. In a few short hours Zheng appeared on CBC Radio Two’s Early Edition, presented to the Surrey Board of Trade, was interviewed on camera for CBC TV.

The federal government has announced that legislation to legalize marijuana will be tabled in April 2017. Last Friday’s intense media interest reflects the complexity and far reaching consequences of this legislation on businesses. With the legality of recreational marijuana use, employers will need to consider and update work place policies to ensure they are compliant with the BC Human Rights Code so that employees are aware of the consequences of onsite use.

Cindy Zheng and the firm’s employee and human rights group are focused on this and other critical workplace issues.
